Personality And Temperament:  Is The Bulldog The Right Breed For Your Family?

Many people do not consider Bulldogs for pets mostly because of its stocky stature and seemingly mean appearance. However, this breed is actually known to make good family pets. It is actually quite gentle and not too hyperactive. In fact, it is known to be quite the lazy dog which is the reason why it is perfect for small homes or apartments. Even families with small children will do well with Bulldogs. Some are very playful when they are puppies and tend to be a little bit restless. However, it often becomes calm and composed as it grows to become a full adult.

The Bulldog sometimes displays a sense of mischief and hardheadedness. It sometimes completely disregards orders and commands from its master. However, this breed is known to be extremely affectionate to its owners, especially to the little children. It tries to seek as much attention from its family as it can get. This is very important in keeping a pet Bulldog happy. The less human attention it gets, the more it seeks for it and as they continue to receive very little, it can be quite destructive. This, however, shall not be mistaken for the lack of discipline. All it needs is an owner who gives it enough attention yet does not spoil it by giving it all that it wants. It is important to make the Bulldog understand that it is dominated by a master. Simply recognizing this will allow it to display a better sense of obedience.  It also shows a sense of intense loyalty towards its family.

Do not, however, mistake the Bulldog’s affection for the lack of courage. Because of its extreme loyalty and sense of responsibility towards its family, it has the capability to ward off intruders from your home. It is extremely wary of strangers and would prefer to be around familiar people. For this, it is a breed that is considered to be a great family pet without sacrificing its use for security. It will surely alert its family of any strangers that come too close.

For families with other pets in the household, Bulldogs may also be the perfect addition. They get along with other animals and do not have the tendency to play rough, especially while they are indoors. They show no problems about sharing living spaces with other animals and they sometimes even welcome the company. However, when it comes to other strange animals from outside its household, it tends to be very guarded and tries its best to send them away.

For these reasons, the Bulldog is the perfect breed for families with relatively small living spaces and those who have much attention to give to their pets. Also, it will do very well for those families who keep other pets. Affectionate and loyal but guarded. This is the type of pet that can be kept indoors with small children and still feel safe against strange people or animals. All in all, this breed will make a good family pet. It is important to note, however, that this breed may be a little bit frustrating for those who seek overly disciplined dogs.
