Table Manners: Some Scraps Can Hurt Your BullDog

If you love your dog, it can be hard not to feed them from the table when you're eating. Especially when they're little it can seem like your dog really knows how to lay it on when you're at the table and it is all too easy to succumb to those puppy eyes you fell in love with. While feeding your dog scraps from your dinner is not always a bad thing, there are certain things that are not okay for your dog to eat, even though they might be very good and nutritious for you.

What is Safe to Feed Your Dog?

While some foods are harmful to your dog, there are certain things in your diet that could also stand to benefit your canine companion. Your pets have a lot of the same nutritional requirements as you, like the need for leafy greens in their diet as well as plenty of whole grains and protein. Dog food manufacturers even incorporate these into commercial dried dog foods that are sold at the market and pet store.

Here are a few of the foods in your refrigerator and cupboard that might be good for your pup:

  • Most vegetables (except those that are NOT SAFEsee below)
  • Green beans
  • Rice
  • Yams
  • Whole-grain wheat bread
  • Carrots
  • Grains
  • Milk
  • Yogurt
  • Meat

What is NOT Safe to Feed Your Dog?

Here are some foods that are not safe to feed your dog, under any circumstances. Certain human foods can cause severe organ damage and other medical problems with your pet, so avoid these at all costs.

  • Raw Onions can cause anemia in some, less robust dogs. Also weakens red blood cells, causing other problems.
  • Nutmeg -known to cause seizures and heart attacks in some dogs. Can result in death
  • Salt/Sodium can cause kidney failure
  • Grapes/Raisins -even a few raisins can kill a dog. Leave grapes and raisins out of Fido's diet, and keep yours to yourself.
  • Avocados-avocado meat/fruit and the pits are both extremely toxic to dogs.
  • Chocolate, milk chocolate can cause seizures and death. Coffee contains caffeine, which is bad for your dog's system.
  • Tomatoes and tomato leaves can cause heart problems with even the healthiest of dogs.
  • Some mushrooms can be deadly to dogs.
  • Xylitol-foods that contain Xylitol are dangerous. This is an extremely toxic substance for any pet.

It is the nature of a pet owner to want to feed their pets scraps from their plates, but it is important to know what is okay to feed your dog and what isn't. It is natural to know that there are some things that are going to be good for your dog, like meat and vegetables, but then there are other things that are more common sense not to feed your dog, like candy and chocolate.
