How To Spot The Perfect Bulldog

Although it really should not matter when it comes to getting a Bulldog for a pet, others find it important to spot the perfect Bulldog basing their decision to buy on the show dog criteria. These criteria include everything from size, proportion, and symmetry, up to the last details of its features.

Although general behavior and temperament is an important criterion for judging Bulldogs, they are heavily scored for their physical features. In terms of its built, it is important for it to hive a height exactly or close to twelve inches and weight anywhere from forty to fifty pounds. The proportion of its skull to its features is also measured. The height of the Bulldog measure from its shoulders to its paws should be directly proportional to its skull’s circumference.

As the head is carefully studied, the dog’s round eyes are closer to perfect when it is found farther from its ears. Even the angles by which these parts are related are measured by the judges and have much bearing on the scores that they will receive. The farther apart the eyes are, the higher the score. However, if the eyes’ corners cannot be seen when the dog’s face is viewed from the front, this is considered to be deformed and will garner very low scores. More attention to the eyes are placed as their sclera (or the white part of the eyeballs) should not be visible. Also, they will garner low scores if they posses bulging or sunken eyes. The eyes should be set just right. When it comes to the dog’s ears, high scores are received for those that are found high at the top of the head and are shaped very intricately.

Even the skull is carefully studied and its forehead which should be flat. Its snout should be wide but very short and should include a large black nose with wide nostrils. Some bulldogs are born with brown noses and these are automatically disqualified. The perfect bulldogs must always have black noses. When it comes to the jaws, the more the lower one protrudes outwards, the higher the score of the dog. It must have strong teeth that are large and the number of teeth is also considered in the judging process.

In terms of the neck, the bulldog must have one that is broad and arched beautifully. The general stature of the bulldog is observed very carefully and must have the right curves at the right places. A bulging stomach always garners negative points. When it comes to the tail, two types are often accepted. They shall always be short but either straight or curved will do.

In real judging, everything is scored. Shoulders must be broad and slant at a specific angle, forelegs must be short and found far apart from each other, elbows should be low and prominent, and the feet has to be of average size. Even the toes and paws are given much attention. Apart from these, the texture and color of the coat is also important. The skin must also have a specific looseness in order to create the perfect folds. Apart from these, the general temperament and personality of the dog will also be judged.
