How To Overcome Bulldog Health Issues
Like any other breed, Bulldogs have common health related conditions that owners have to look out for. Of course, when purchasing
or adopting an adult, it is easy to spot these conditions. However, when getting a Bulldog pup to be a family pet, some of these conditions
may arise, as the pup grows older in that household. It is also important for Bulldog owners to be familiar with these common conditions to
be wary of them and to take corrective actions as soon as signs show up.
The most common health problems that Bulldogs have, involves its sensitivity to temperature. These materialize on their skin as allergies or
diseases. For most of these, easy remedies can be made. However, for some of these skin conditions, veterinary attention must be provided. Some
of the most common of these skin conditions include Dermatitis, General Allergies, Demodectic Mange, Hotspots, Interdigital Cysts, Tear Stains,
and Yeast Infections.
Dermatitis is a bacterial infection that attacks inflamed skin usually from fleabites or softened areas due to poor ventilation. This
bacterial infection develops gradually into crusty spots usually beneath skin folds or under the tail. These can easily be remedied by vitamins
to be taken orally or special shampoo. Common types of Dermatitis in dogs are Hotspots. They materialize on the dog’s skin as foul smelling moist
patches of skin that contains pus. For these, anti-biotic must be given.
General Allergies materialize on the dog’s skin as a reaction to something ingested or
something that it came in contact with in its immediate environment. Although inflammations due to this may usually be treated with topical
medicine, it is important to note that they have the tendency to lead to other skin infections. It might be best to consult a veterinarian before
it gets worse. If these allergies escalate, they may lead to Demodectic Mange. These are caused by mites and tend to affect the dog’s immune
system very badly. For this, intravenous medications are sometimes needed.
Another type of common skin condition among Bulldogs is Interdigital Cysts. These are severe accesses normally located between the dog’s toes.
The usually develop as an effect of ingrown hair. For this, iodine solutions must be regularly applied. However, severe cases may involve
surgical removal.
Tear Stains and Yeast Infections are also common among Bulldogs. These develop because of excess tearing that may become breeding grounds for
common bacteria and yeast. In some cases, they develop at the chin where the skin is usually softened by continuous wetness of the fur from
drinking. These can be easily treated with anti-bacterial teardrops or topical medications.
As for every other condition, prevention is better than treatment. Owners must not wait until their dogs develop these skin conditions. It is
important to keep their dogs healthy through nutritious diet and regular exercise. For Bulldogs in particular, it is recommended that they are
kept in temperate areas. It is essential that they are not overexposed to heat as this is the source of their skin conditions. Lastly, their dog
areas should be kept clean at all times in order to avoid developing breeding grounds for bacteria.
